Hello Porter Families,

The first-grade team will be posting the weekly learning schedule for the upcoming week every Friday. We want to give families enough time review the schedule and decide what activities you would like your child to complete throughout the week.

We’ve made a few changes to streamline the learning calendar. Recommended activities have been highlighted. The remaining activities are beneficial, and you can use them if your student is interested in them. Please remember, all activities are optional, but we hope the revised calendar will be more student and family friendly. Also included is a “How to Login to Different Apps” page!

Click on the link below to watch a tutorial about how to navigate the schedule and learn about the new changes!

As a result of the sudden closure of school on March 13, several students did not have the opportunity to take our last social studies test. The first grade team has developed an alternate assessment for those students. I have contacted those families through email regarding this alternative assessment. The Geography Remediation will assess the same SOL's given on the IA assessment, which is our traditional testing source for students. Please feel free to contact me via email if you have any questions. The end of the marking period is Friday, April 24, 2020.

Dear Porter Families,
The first grade team has created a useful tool for you to use with your student. It is called Instructional Calendar. The link is below this message. We have compiled the SOL's we have covered in first grade from the beginning of the year until March 13th. This document contains the SOL objectives and we have altered the language to make more student (and adult) friendly. We hope this tool will help you to support your student's learning.

Good Afternoon Porter Families!
Our Porter page has so many resources available to you and it may help to fill or round out your day with your student. Mrs. Kelsey, Mr. Mathias, and Dr. Nicholson will have activities related to their specialties on their webpages.
Having your student maintain routines could be helpful to you right now, so here are possibilities for you to incorporate into your days.

In the morning, we have quiet writing time-students get their writing notebooks and write about anything. We spend about 20 minutes writing. On Friday, we share our favorite piece of writing. Your student can read their best piece to you on Friday.

If you can, go for a walk around 11:00 am-That's our Miler's time. If you can't go out, and you have a device to use, put on GoNoodle. That is our rainy day resource!

We eat snack and read a book independently after Miler's.

One of our favorite times of the day is next, LUNCH!

We are back outside after lunch from 1:30-1:44. That's another favorite time of day!

From 1:50-2:30 we then go to encore. Check the encore teachers webpages for some ideas on how to stay healthy and enriched through music and art.

When we return from encore, I read aloud or put on a video-youtube, brain pop jr.  related to science or social studies.
(I do plan to do read aloud via video-please give me a little time to find and learn the best platform that I can use easily.)

We end our day talking about something we learned from the day.  I hope you find this information useful and please don't hesitate to contact me if you need assistance with anything.

Thank you!

Good Morning Porter Families!
I am trying to maintain routines for myself and my family and I would like to try to keep some our class routines during this time away from school.
This week's sight words are:
over-new-sound-take-only-little-work-know-place-years.
Here are a 5 things students can do with these words this week.
Day 1- Rainbow write each word 3 times. (Rainbow write-use different colors to write the word).
Day 2- Write each word 1 time-use the color blue to write the consonants and use the color red to write the vowel. Circle the vowel teams and underline the words with that follow the Silent E rule.
Day 3- Write each word in a complete sentence.
Day 4- Make sight word flash cards and practice spelling the words.
Day 5- Give your sight word flash cards to an adult and let them quiz you.

2. If your student can not tie their shoes, please practice this skill at home.
3. Please make sure your student knows their bus number. They will be walking to their buses without me starting Monday, Sept. 9. There will be teachers on outside duty to help but they will be walking with other first graders to their bus at dismissal time.
Thank you!

helloDear Porter Students and Families,

Welcome Mary G. Porter Traditional School and to first grade! My name is Denise Chapman and I have the privilege of being your first-grade teacher. I am so excited, and I can’t wait to meet you and your families! Together we will create a classroom community where everyone is valued and respected. We will learn together, grow together, and have fun together! We are a family at Porter, and I am honored to welcome you to our first-grade family.

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. This is my 24th year in education and my 3rd year teaching at Porter. I am originally from Brooklyn, New York. My family and I has been living in Virginia for fourteen years. I have two wonderful daughters. Danica will be a senior at Potomac High School and Damaris will be in 6th grade at Porter. I watch too much TV and I enjoy trying foods from different cultures. I love listening to “old school” music, dancing, and reading books about teaching. My favorite color is red, my favorite fruit are crispy grapes, and my favorite food is any kind of rice (I know that is an unusual favorite food!).

We are going to learn so many new things this school year! We are going to write stories and letters to our friends. We are going to have number talks and work in math learning centers. We will learn about Virginia in social studies and science. We will do lots and lots of reading! It is going to be an exciting school year.

Enjoy the rest of your summer! Don’t forget to do your summer reading! I am getting our classroom ready for our year of learning! I can’t wait to meet you!

Sincerely,

Denise Chapman
