Week of 5/18-5/22

Hello again Porter Family, I hope you have been able to go out and safely enjoy the nice weather.  I have great news to share!  My son, David, graduated with honors from Virginia Tech last Friday!  He was a Porter student from 1st through 8th grade!
Also, did you see that PTO is going to do a virtual talent show!! I know how talented you all are and I can't wait to see what you do.  I hope you will participate!
This week's lesson will be a continuation of last week, as there was a lot of information.  I did find out that the video of the author reading her book is no longer available.  I am posting another video to hear and see the book. (Thanks to Shannon Kelsey)

Notice near the end of the book that Vasya named his paintings after the music he loved:
Improvisation
Composition
Accompaniment
Fugue
Movement
Three Sounds
I challenge you to look up these terms and see what they mean.  I know that many of you already know about Improvisation!

Don't forget to go to Chrome Music Lab Kandinsky to create your own masterpieces!https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Kandinsky/

Middle School Chorus Classes
Here are two videos for you to sing with and enjoy!  This lady is awesome and her exercises are great for your vocal agility!

Week of 5/11-5/15 -Music And Art Mash-up!!!
Hey Porter Family,  I sure miss sharing music with you.  I hope you are finding these lessons fun and a good source of stress relief.  This lesson will most likely spread into two weeks as it is a little more time consuming.  Remember that you can always scroll down and repeat any lessons you like.  Dr. Nicholson will also have some lessons related to the videos you see posted here, so be sure to check out her page as well.
Here is a link to a video of author Barb Rosenstock sharing her book The Noisy Paint Box.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzU7pHKmv-E  This link doesn't work anymore!  The video is about 20 minutes long, so feel free to break these activities up into smaller sections.
Describe the way Vasya painted. What two senses is he using?
How did his family react when they saw this first painting?
Have you ever felt this type of connection to a piece of music or to a piece of art?

Here is a link to the illustrator of The Noisy Paint Box  with a wonderful lesson what it might be like to hear colors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qg-C8ubmS8I
Finally, here is a link to Chrome Music Lab - Kandinsky where you can paint and create music.

Middle School Classes can explore the Chrome Music Lab and there is a news article about synesthesia in my files and documents section.  It is on the second page of files and is called Tasting The Number Seven.  Very interesting to learn who has this ability and how they use it.

Week of 5/4-5/8 – Let’s Jump Rope!!!!

REMEMBER TO CHECK WITH YOUR PARENTS BEFORE YOU TRY ANYTHING WITH YOUR JUMP ROPES!  SAFETY FIRST!

This week I want you to get outside and JUMP!  You can use lots of things for a jump rope; hose, heavy string, rope.  Jump rope songs and chants are a fun way to exercise and make music too.  The rope provides the steady beat and your chant, and sometimes your jumping patterns, provide the rhythm patterns.  See my example below:

In my files and documents sections there are several jump rope rhymes for you to use.  See if you can figure out the correct rhythms to put with the words.  You can even create your own rhymes!  Here’s one I wrote:

Porter friends, Porter friends

Big and small

Let’s see if I can

Name them all…

Teachers, teachers

Miss them too

How many can I

Name for you?

Here’s a fun song about jumping rope!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgUDYOlgx1M

Lesson for 4th and Middle School Classes:

Watch this short Ted talk about the history of jumping rope and how the songs and chants influenced today’s music.  “How The Jump Rope Got It’s Rhythm”

https://www.ted.com/talks/kyra_gaunt_how_the_jump_rope_got_its_rhythm/transcript?language=en

Can you write your own Jump Rope chant?  Do you know of any other songs that borrow from jump rope chants?  Challenge yourself to get outside and try some out!

Here’s a video of some amazing jumpers in slow motion! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eg-_B-Q2sg

4/27-5/1 This week I have posted a music tic-tac-toe board.  All of the activities on the board require NO technology. (you all know how much I love technology) See how many of these activities you can complete.  You can still use previous lessons on this page as well.  Flipgrid codes are still good if you want to send me a video.  Email is great too.  I'm on everyday and would love to hear from you.
