Happy Monday Porter Parents! I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing weekend and are refreshed and ready for a new and wonderful week!  To find out what we are learning this week check THIS out!  Remediation information: Remember that remediation is reteaching and practicing missed objectives from the assessment. Depending on the level, some students may take longer than others to remediate from the tests. I pull small groups to work on concepts and I send home review work and reading to help students who are struggling. Some retakes could be within the week and others may not be given for two weeks. Remember that all students are different and require different amounts of time to master a concept. If your child receives packets of information to work on, please review that information at home. :)  Parent Portal: Parent portal can sometimes act up... which means some grades may not show correctly. Again, this is new for the county so please be patient with it. :) We are all working on learning this new system and they are still working all the kinks out.  Communication: I love hearing from you on Class Dojo, Remind, e-mail, or even notes! However, please allow me at least 24 hours to respond to questions. I am available from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. daily to answer your questions. Any messages after that time will be answered the next day. For absences etc, I will forward messages to the office immediately. :)  I hope everyone is finding it much easier to get to Office and Clever for Moby Max and IXL. Again, if you have any questions on how to get to Clever, watch the video on last weeks blog. :)  Field trip information is coming soon!  ****The makerspace needs your help!**** We are in need of wire hangers! If you have any wire hangers that you could donate to the makerspace it would be greatly appreciated! Have a wonderful week!!!

Happy Monday Porter Patriots! We have a jam packed week ahead of us for sure in room 105!  Don't forget about the weather assessment tomorrow as well as the number sense assessment on Thursday! Study, study, study! Last week we were not able to receive our new spelling words. Be patient with me as we make get our spelling up and running!  If you checked the gradebook, DO NOT BE ALARMED! We took our first test last week and everyone persevered through it! I will be working on remediation and retesting this week. Remember, the new (higher) grade will replace the old grade. Also, the retake policy is for unit tests. These are those tests at the end of each unit that include ALL of the taught standards. Quick checks, exit tickets, and progress checks will not be retaken. These are just to see how the students are progressing throughout the units and help me figure out what I need to reteach and work on more in small groups. The final goal is that students master these concepts by the unit test.  This week is the BOOK FAIR! We will be visiting the Book Fair tomorrow to make our wish lists to send home. If you would like your child to purchase a book, please send in money labeled "Book Fair" so I can send them down to make their purchases. I wouldn't want to be using lunch money to buy books. :)  Tomorrow the September reading logs are due! Students will receive an October reading log tomorrow as well.  If you are interested in seeing some of the standards we are learning this week, check out our integration sheet on the files and documents page under 2nd grade curriculum resources.  I have posted the Back to School presentation under Beginning of the Year on the files and documents page. :) Check it out! If you have any questions feel free to message me!  As always, I hope everyone had a great weekend and are ready to rock this new week!  Thank you for all your support in your child's education! Love,  Ms. Miller P.S.  Here is the video to help you get to Office and Clever!

Happy Monday Porter Patriots!  We have a busy and exciting week ahead of us in room 105!  Let's recap everything we've accomplished over the past few weeks in 2nd grade. In Language Arts, we've been reviewing the story elements of character and setting. We've practiced reading groups which include reading on iStation and IXL, listening to reading using the EPIC app, word work reviewing short a, o, and u words, writing narratives in our class shared writing journals, as well as utilizing our reading and comprehension skills to read Scholastic news articles about Mo Willems and growth mindset as well as reading about the seasons and weather.  Math time has been JAMMED packed with review of ordinal numbers and calendar, story problems, as well as strategies we can use to solve math problems.  In science, we learned about weather tools and how meteorologists use them to predict and track the weather. Students learned about rain gauges, thermometers, and wind gauges.  We continued to learn about the responsibilities of good citizens including how to be self-disciplined and self-reliant in Social Studies.  This week we will continue reading groups and will be starting new word work words. Keep an eye out on your students' agenda for this weeks words. They are not required to practice them at home, but are encouraged to add them to their 20 minute nightly reading time.  We will review time and money this week in math, and will continue working on story problems and strategies. For those who need extra practice on ordinal numbers/positions and calendar, will receive a extra help packet some time this week that can be used to practice at home.  This week Ms. Greer and Ms. McDermott will be joining us for TECH TIME! Students will learn about extreme weather and conditions. They will research an assigned storm or condition and will create their own weather report. Then using iPads, they will use the Green Screen app to record their weather report to be meteorologists for the day! How exciting! Be sure to check out our Seesaw page to see if your student has posted! The citizenship test is on Friday. Study guides were sent home last week. These study guides do not have to be returned but it is recommended that students practice and review at home. We will continue working on honesty and trustworthiness as well as voting throughout this week.  Picture day is also on Friday, September 27. Students should be in Porter dress code. If you would like to order pictures, please be sure to send in the picture form by Friday.  Last but not least... Back to school night is this Tuesday, September 24 from 6:30-7:15! I will be going over SO much about 2nd grade and would love to see you there!  I hope you all have a marvelous week! Love, Ms. Miller P.S. Here is a copy of the directions to get to Clever! Don't forget that you have to use Office 365 first AND your child's EMAIL.  howtogettoclever.pdf

Whew! The second week of school has come and gone and we've been SO busy in room 105.  We continued learning classroom/school rules and procedures and are ready to start week 3 of 2nd grade!  Last week we set the stage for reading and math centers. We shared conversations about how they should look and sound. We modeled the correct behaviors for rotations. Reading and math centers are where the real MAGIC happens in our classroom. These centers allow students to practice new skills, review previously mastered skills, as well has work with me in small differentiated groups. This means I can make sure ALL students are challenged as well as remediated as necessary. Reading and math centers also allow for more independent as well as cooperative learning with classmates. This week we practiced working in partners on several activities which will help us work successfully together throughout the entire school year. We will use the Star Quality of teamwork everyday in 2nd grade.  This week we will have several visitors in room 105. Ms. Koenig as well as Mrs. Foor will be joining us for a read aloud. How exciting! We will have our first tech time with Ms. Greer and Ms. McDermott as well this week! Students will be creating a motivational poster for the Star Qualities using iPads.  On Wednesday, we will be helping the cafeteria prepare lunch by husking the corn. What an awesome way to reinforce the Star Qualities of responsibility and compassion.  Don't forget to check out the other links on my webpage for more information, resources, as well as important dates coming up at Porter!  Have a great week! Ms. Miller

Woo hoo! We all rocked our FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL! What an amazing week it was in room 105! We reviewed our STAR Qualities, classroom and school procedures, rules, and started to really get to know one another. This year, our class motto is: Show Kindness Always.  We will be working together to create a classroom community that consistently demonstrates the STAR Qualities and shows support and kindness towards all students and adults at Porter. We will participate in a daily morning meeting where we will learn more about each other and we will learn important skills to grow as good citizens not only in our school but also in our outside communities AND families.   To my wonderful Patriots in room 105: I believe in you. I believe you are capable of AMAZING things! I cannot wait to watch how you grow this school year. We will learn more about our Growth Mindsets, however, remember what I told you today... you just don't know it, YET! Keep trying and never give up no matter how difficult things may be. And if you fail? TRY, TRY, TRY AGAIN! YOU are AMAZING! Parents: Please check the blue emergency cards and correct any mistakes (transportation included) and return them to school ASAP.    Love,  Ms. Miller
