We will also begin our money unit in math. This is one of the hardest units for our first graders. Please start allowing your student to count money with you at home, the grocery store, etc. to help them practice real life scenarios. They will need to be able to identify the penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and $1.00 and their value. They will also learn to count mixed coins which include the penny, dime, and nickel. Please go to the useful links tab and use some the games to help support your first grader!
Parents...as you know this is the season for colds, flu, viruses, etc. This year it has hit our class hard and several students and myself have been sick. Please take some time review good hand washing with your student. I hope that everyone who was sick is feeling better and those who haven't continue to remain healthy. Please remember if you child is vomiting, etc. or has a fever they need to be home for 24 hours. You just need to call the school or send me an email to let us know. Hope you are enjoying your three day weekend and let's get healthy!

*Reminder-There is no field trip tomorrow! It was postponed due to cold weather, and rescheduled for March 2nd. The same chaperones are invited to attend if they still can.
*Tomorrow is the spelling bee for those of you that have signed up to participate. It will take place right after school in the cafeteria. Please remember that your first grader will be competing against students through 5th grade. It might be a good idea to prepare them in case they get eliminated early on. First grade will hold our own spelling bee at the end of the year, which will cover all of our word wall words and academic vocabulary from the school year.
Due to the prediction of cold temperatures and strong winds on Thursday, our outdoor field trip to Mount Vernon has been moved to Thursday, March 2nd. Our chosen chaperones will remain the same for the March 2nd date.
Thank you for your understanding,
The First Grade Team
This Tuesday, February 14th we will be having a small Valentine celebration at the end of the day. Your student may bring Valentine’s for each child in the class to hand out. We recommend having your student sign their name to the Valentine and not address them. This way it is easier for them to hand out. We have 27 students in our class; please make sure you have one for every student.

I will be looking for several parent volunteers to come in to help with our Famous Americans play. Students will be given parts soon and will need to memorize their lines, so the more they practice the better. We will looking for morning and afternoon volunteers to pull different scenes from the play. The best times would be 10:15-11:30 or from 2:30-3:30. Please let me know if you are available. Remember June will be here before you know so don't wait to get your volunteer hours in!!
Parents, I wanted to remind you Friday, January 27th is a half day and students will be dismissed at 12:00 pm. Monday, January 30th is a teacher workday and there will be no school.
This week we have a math test on time to the hour, half hour, and calendar. Half hour is giving students the most difficulty. They must be able to read the time on analog and digital clocks. They will also need to read a calendar. A study guide came home on pink paper January 12th. If you have lost or misplaced it you can download another one from the first grade main page. Also you may use the quizziz and blend space for extra practice as well.

I hope you a great winter break! First I want to thank those of you that sent in very thoughtful gifts before winter break. As the students brought them in with excitement some cards were misplaced so if you did not receive a thank you card please know that I appreciated your kindness.
We will hit the ground running as the end of the 2nd quarter is fast approaching.
Here is what's to come:
Reading-retelling our stories using events from the beginning, middle and end as well as using story elements-characters, setting, problem and solution.
Writing-we will continue our writing of opinion pieces. Students need to be able to support their opinion with at least 3 reasonable reasons. I shouldn't see anymore spelling mistakes with our already covered sight words. The kids need to be using their dictionary every time we are writing.
Math-time to the hour and half hour. Continue practicing addition and subtraction facts nightly
S.S.- we will begin famous Americans.
Science-migration and hibernation and animal adaptations will be what we begin with.
Have a wonderful and safe winter break with your family and friends! We will see you back at school on January 3rd.
First grade we have a social studies test this Tuesday, December 20th. Please make sure you have your student read the study guide themselves and review the answers with them.

Parents with the winter months upon us please feel free to use this page as a resource. Use the snow day folder under files and documents or any of the useful links, this will help to maintain skills when away from school.
If all else fails the most important thing is to have your student practice their math facts and read each day you are home, 20 minutes in the morning and evening. They can write about their snow day adventures, about a movie they watched, or a board game you may play.
Remember you can use Raz-KIDS

Welcome back 1st Grade! I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving break! Now we are going to get right back to work! Parents, I know this can be an exciting time of year for students so please remind them daily that they need to follow the rules at school and stay focused on learning.
This month we will we working on fiction story elements and begin introducing non-fiction stories. We will begin opinion writing, where students will have to give an opinion and support their opinion. In math, we will wrap up our geometry unit (look for a study guide soon!) and head right into measurement. Keep practicing those math facts, some students are so close to subtraction on Moby Max! In social studies, we will be learning about past, present and future and what that looks like in different communities. We will begin our study of nocturnal animals in science! So much to learn and so much fun to be had!
We will be testing geometry and measurement in math this month. Also, we will test on past, present, and future in social studies. So look for the study guide to come home a week before each test. Students are now expected to read the tests independently. Please have them read the study guide with you each night leading up to the test. Review academic vocabulary words and their meaning. We suggest creating a multiple choice test, have them read it aloud to you and go over the answers together. Let's earn some jean passes!
