Please plan on staying when you drop off your child.
HELP-I need a parent volunteer to come in and do this round of sight words with my students.
Our big 1st grade production of "A Night at the American Museum" will take place in May. Here soon I will need parents to come in to run play lines with our kids.
Reminder our field trip is this Thursday. Please make sure that your child has good tennis shoes, as we will be doing a lot of walking and a jacket. It will be chilly in the morning down by the water. If you volunteered to chaperone, you will need to be in our classroom at 9. Our lunch will be given to us there. The menu consists of chicken strips, french fries, jello cup and a drink. If your child can't have this lunch, please let me know and make sure you send in a lunch for them in a bag.
We have started our money unit. This is one of the hardest units for our first graders. Please start allowing your student to count money with you at home, the grocery store, etc. to help them practice real life scenarios. They will need to be able to identify the penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and $1.00 and their value. They will also learn to count mixed coins which include the penny, dime, and nickel. Please go to the useful links tab and use some the games to help support your first grader!
Here is the review to go with the study guide sent home yesterday. Our test will be next week on the 8th and 9th. Please have the kiddos practice reading their study guide.

Enjoy you long weekend!
*Reminder-There is no field trip tomorrow! It was postponed due to cold weather, and rescheduled for March 2nd. The same chaperones are invited to attend if they still can.
*Tomorrow is the spelling bee for those of you that have signed up to participate. It will take place right after school in the cafeteria. Please remember that your first grader will be competing against students through 5th grade. It might be a good idea to prepare them in case they get eliminated early on. First grade will hold our own spelling bee at the end of the year, which will cover all of our word wall words and academic vocabulary from the school year.

Due to the prediction of cold temperatures and strong winds on Thursday, our outdoor field trip to Mount Vernon has been moved to Thursday, March 2nd. Our chosen chaperones will remain the same for the March 2nd date.
Thank you for your understanding,
The First Grade Team
This Tuesday, February 14th we will be having a small Valentine celebration at the end of the day. Your student may bring Valentine’s for each child in the class to hand out. We recommend having your student sign their name to the Valentine and not address them. This way it is easier for them to hand out. We have 27 students in our class; please make sure you have one for every student.
We will also be celebrating the 100th day of school on that day as well.
*Report cards will be coming home tomorrow. Some students are missing the green report card folder, so I just stapled them and had them put it in their red folder. Please sign the folder and return to me.
*Chaperones were chosen today for our field trip to Mount Vernon. Please see note stapled in the agenda. These families have been chosen as chaperones:
Kaylee - Mustapha - Ryan - Kelly - Senya
*Our Animal Adaptations Ia test will be given on Thursday 2/2. Please use the link below to play a multiple choice game to practice. Also have your child practice reading the study guide and quiz sent home last week as practice.

*Chaperones for our Mount Vernon field trip will be chosen on Monday, February 6th.
*Friday is a half day - dismissal will be at noon. Lunch will be served early.
*Study guide for Animal Adaptations was sent home today. Please review often, and let your child practice reading it. This will help with reading it during the test as we try to use similar vocabulary.
*HELP- we are almost out of water again. If you haven't already donated to our classroom, please consider doing so at this time. Thanks so much!!
*Field trip forms were sent home yesterday. Be watching for them.
Please have a chat with your student on their behavior. Over the last couple of weeks, our talking has been out of control. I am seeing this as being very disrespectful. Today, Ms. Urena the art teacher was unable to teach due to the amount of talking. Report cards are coming soon, and I will be addressing this in the conduct area if I don't see any improvements. Enough is enough. When an adult asks you to be quiet, we expect you to stop talking.
Today the study guide for time came home. Students are still having a difficult time with telling time to the half hour. Please practice with them.
Students are now expected to read the tests independently. Please have them read the study guide with you each night leading up to the test. Review academic vocabulary words and their meaning. We suggest creating a multiple choice test, have them read it aloud to you and go over the answers together. Let's earn some jean passes!
Family Ice Skating Night
Saturday, January 14th
$10.00 at the door which includes skate rental
$9.00 if you pay in advance. Flyer on the Porter site.
I want to welcome everyone back to school tomorrow! We are going to be off and running as soon as we get back. Here are the units we will be working on.
Reading-retelling our stories using events from the beginning, middle and end
as well as using story elements-characters, setting, problem and solution.
Writing-we will continue our writing of opinion pieces. Students need to be able to support their opinion with at least 3 reasonable reasons. I shouldn't see anymore spelling mistakes with our already covered sight words. The kids need to be using their dictionary every time we are writing.
Math-time to the hour and half hour.
S.S.- famous Americans will be our next unit of study.
Science-Migration and hibernation and animal adaptations will be what we begin with.
I want to take a minute to say thank you for all the wonderful and thoughtful gifts!! Some of the gifts came without cards and as I was writing thank you cards, I might have missed someone. I am always unsure that these cards will make it to you at all. :)
First grade we have a social studies test this Tuesday, December 20th. Please make sure you have your student read the study guide themselves and review the answers with them.
Here is a QUIZIZZ Review Game you can use at home. Competing against each other is a fun way to study!

Parents with the winter months upon us please feel free to use this page as a resource. Use the snow day folder under files and documents or any of the useful links, this will help to maintain skills when away from school.
If all else fails the most important thing is to have your student practice their math facts and read each day you are home, 20 minutes in the morning and evening. They can write about their snow day adventures, about a movie they watched, or a board game you may play.
Remember you can use Raz-KIDS
teacher name is:
your student should know their password
Here are two math fast fact links as well.
Addition Fast Facts
Subtraction Fast Facts
Of course have a blast in the snow send me pictures so I can share them with the class when we return.
I need an at home PENCIL SHARPENER!!!!
We are running low on the pre-sharpened pencils and will need someone to sharpen pencils. If you are able to do this for us..... please email me at email@example.com and I will send a bag home for you. Remember you must complete 10 hours of volunteer service, and this would be a great way to get some hours. : ) ; )
Is my sweet talking working ????
Ways you can help
*****WHAT CAN YOU DO?? Have your child practice writing. Give them a topic and let them: Brainstorm their ideas, formulate complete sentences and then you can edit their work with them. Next have them rewrite and draw a picture. If we can get these sent in, I will make a class book that the students can read!
Be a READING volunteer - Whenever you have a few minutes to spare, our reading cart is ready for parent readers. The sign up genius for this is on the front page of the PORTER messenger website. It is a red button towards the top of the page. All you need to do is come to the classroom and look at the folder right outside my door. Ask for one of the students listed and walk to the cart and pick out a few books to read together. Make it FUN.
HELP-Continue to practice tying shoes. We waste so much time getting in and out from Miler's due to the fact that I am having to tie shoes.
PARENTS- Please label your child's jackets with names. All of our students wear the Porter fleece jackets and without a name in it we have no idea whose jacket it is.
We have students in our classroom that have food allergies. So, cupcakes are not the way to celebrate here at Porter. Since our allergic students wouldn't be able to have the cupcakes, it isn't fair for the other students to have one. Please consider joining our PTA birthday club here at Porter. You can then decide what other options you could choose. Here are some options, if you didn't want to join the birthday club: Pencils, bubbles, stickers, play dough, or bookmarks.
Thank you for your understanding with this matter.
Students have the nightly homework to read for 20 minutes every weeknight. Please record the title of the book they read on the reading calendar found in their agenda. The September reading calendar is on page 21.
You will need to sign the calendar at the end of the month.
I will grade their reading calendars on the first school day of the following month.
Happy reading! 😀
