February 13, 2017
Due to the prediction of cold temperatures and strong winds on Thursday, our outdoor field trip to Mount Vernon has been moved to Thursday, March 2nd. Our chosen chaperones will remain the same for the March 2nd date.
Thank you for your understanding,
The First Grade Team
This Tuesday, February 14th we will be having a small Valentine celebration at the end of the day. Your student may bring Valentine’s for each child in the class to hand out. We recommend having your student sign their name to the Valentine and not address them. This way it is easier for them to hand out. We have 27 students in our class; please make sure you have one for every student.
We will have our science test this Thursday, Feb. 2nd. Please use your study guide and the quizizz below to study. Remember to have your student read the study guide and quizizz independently.
Game Pin: 585515
Just a reminder!
Students are now expected to read the tests independently. Please have them read the study guide with you each night leading up to the test. Review academic vocabulary words and their meaning. We suggest creating a multiple choice test, have them read it aloud to you and go over the answers together.
Parents with the winter months upon us please feel free to use this page as a resource. Use the snow day folder under files and documents or any of the activities under useful links, this will help to maintain skills when away from school.
If all else fails the most important thing is to have your student practice their math facts and read each day you are home, 20 minutes in the morning and evening. They can write about their snow day adventures, about a movie they watched, or a board game you may play.
Remember you can use Raz-KIDS
teacher name is: kgreer8
your student should know their password
Here are two math fast fact links as well.

Subtraction Fast Facts
Of course have a blast in the snow send me pictures so I can share them with the class when we return.
Moby Max math fact assessment sheets came home in the folder too. This sheet is just to show you the progress your child has made since the beginning of school. Your child should be around 50% accuracy at the end of first quarter. Please keep practicing these math facts so your child can answer them quickly and accurately. Your child will need to master addition and subtraction facts by the end of the year in order to receive higher than S- on their fourth quarter report card.
End of Q1- 50% addition
End of Q2- 100% addition
End of Q3- 50% subtraction
End of Q4- 100% subtraction
Many of you have emailed or asked at conferences about Moby Max Math being too difficult for your student. Please rest assure that the triple digit subtraction questions your child is answering is part of a placement test for the student. Moby Max is designed to support and challenge students at their level of development. How your child answers (correct or incorrect) will put them at a specific level. I have had a few students complete the placement test and have been placed at skip counting, fractions and geometry shapes- which is in the first grade SOL's and within our yearly curriculum. Keep persevering through the placement test- I can see which students are still in the placement assessment portion on my end and many of you who have reached out to me concerning Moby are still taking the placement assessment. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.
Be a READING volunteer - Whenever you have a few minutes to spare, our reading cart is ready for parent readers. Click here for the sign up genius for this! All you need to do is come to the classroom and look at the folder right outside my door. Ask for one of the students listed and walk to the cart and pick out a few books to read together. Make it FUN.
