Thank you for visiting our class webpage! My name is Mrs. Ulrich, and I want to welcome you to our 5th grade class! This will be my 16th year teaching, and my second year here at Porter! I want to work with all students and families to support the success of each child throughout the year, and I welcome all communication from families at any time.
Parents, please make sure that you are returning the DAILY folder and agenda each school day. We are working to teach responsibility and it is difficult to do if the students don't have the correct materials here at school. Also be checking their agenda every night. The students write their assignment in there every afternoon. I will often write a "good" note, because I have observed your child doing something good. I may also have to write a "behavior reflection" note, if your child has broken one of our classroom or school rules. If this is the case, that "behavior reflection" note must be signed and returned to me the following day. If you see a "behavior reflection" note, please discuss the behavior that I have witnessed with your child. Porter takes student behavior very seriously and we must nip it in the bud when we see something inappropriate.

3/21/17 CHAPERONE REQUEST:
In order to give each family in the class an opportunity to complete volunteer hours by chaperoning a field trip, I wanted to publish the names of those students who HAVE NOT had an adult family member chaperone a previous field trip. Our class is in need of 5 volunteers to chaperone our upcoming field trip on TUESDAY, April 4th. The following students will have first priority for a family member to volunteer, and if we have not filled all 5 chaperone slots by Monday 3/27/17, then I will open a lottery to those families who have chaperoned a previous field trip. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Mrs. Ulrich

Each class will take FOUR chaperones, since the students will not be visiting exhibits or walking around the venue. The cost for each chaperone to attend the performance is $10. 2/16 Black History Month Poster / Research Project
Students at Porter have been asked to research one historical figure, and our class has the pleasure of researching Frederick Douglass. This week, students have conducted online research and will write one to three paragraphs describing Frederick Douglass' most important contributions to American history. Students MAY create a poster that includes one paragraph and a creative picture of Frederick Douglass. This poster will be due WEDNESDAY 2/22/17, and students will have time to complete this poster during school tomorrow and Tuesday, but they MAY also bring the poster home to work on over the weekend.
We are so proud of our classmate, Makenna, who was awarded 1st place yesterday at the County-wide Martin Luther King Celebration for her writing essay entitled "What the World Needs Now...". Makenna's essay was first place out of over 100 entries from 5th grade students. I also added a photo from the ceremony in the "Files and Documents" folder of our class page. Way to go, Makenna!
1/10/17 Mid-Year Benchmark Assessments:
Students and Families,
In the next several weeks, our 5th grade students will be taking three Mid-Year Benchmark Assessments to assess their progress with the 5th grade standards. These tests, though they will NOT be used to grade students for their report cards, will give the teachers an idea of what areas and students need extra reinforcement as we enter the third quarter of the school year. Students will not need to study beforehand for these exams, but they will be asked to show all work and take as much time as they need to finish each exam. The schedule for our three benchmark tests is:
LANGUAGE ARTS Wednesday 1/18/17
SCIENCE Thursday 1/26/17
MATH Tuesday 1/31/17
1/5/17 Gradebook Remediation UPDATE:
Good afternoon, families, and Happy New Year!
We have changed the way we are grading retakes.
If your child receives a D or F on an assessment, test, or quiz, they are provided remediation in that area. Following appropriate remediation, they will be given a retake assignment and that will be listed as a remediation grade next to the other grade. The two grades will automatically be averaged together. If your child does not require remediation, then they will have an "exempt" for the remediation grade and it will not affect their current grade. If you have any questions, please let me know.
12/7/16 Weather REMINDER:
Good evening, families,
Please help the students remember to dress in layers each morning on the way to school. When the FEELS LIKE temperature is 32 degrees f OR HIGHER, we will go OUTSIDE for Milers and/or recess time. The students will need a coat and gloves each day. Thank you for your support! Mrs. Ulrich
