I have been teaching at Porter my whole teaching career which has been 12 years.  I taught 5th grade for seven years and have been teaching 4thgrade for 5 years so far.  As challenging as teaching can be, I still love it!  This will be a challenging year for us all, but I believe that we can persevere and make it through.  I’m looking forward to a GREAT YEAR!!!

MathOur first unit is on Place Value, Addition and Subtraction.  We have begun with reading, writing, and identifying the place and value of each digit in a nine-digit whole number. Now, we are moving on to Comparing and Ordering, and Rounding Whole Numbers.  This unit will be tested in two parts.  It is imperative that students study their basic math facts every night.

VA StudiesWe have begun the year with Virginia Geography and Native Peoples.  Students will locate Virginia and its bordering states along with water features and the 5 regions.  Students have their note pages so they should be reviewing the information each night.

Language Arts:  We have begun reviewing prefixes and suffixes, and now we are moving on to homophones.  We will begin assessing the students on their reading levels using an online Reading Assessment.

Science:  We have introduced science this year with the Steps of the Scientific Method.
